SEMAGLUTIDE

The game changer in sustained weight loss

Have you been struggling with weight loss? Afraid of taking stimulant drugs for weight loss that can only be taken short term in Ohio? Are other typical weight loss drugs contraindicated for you? Do you have prediabetes? Have you been considering bariatric surgery?

Well, it’s time you checked out a new, FDA approved medication for weight loss - semaglutide.

Semaglutide is a member of a class of drugs that have been used for diabetes management for over a decade - GLP1-RAs (glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists). The weight loss effects of these agents have been known for some time, however, semaglutide appears to be the "best-in-class" GLP-1 RA for weight loss and was recently approved for weight loss by the FDA under the brand name Wegovy®.

Semaglutide

HOW DOES SEMAGLUTIDE WORK?

Semaglutide mimics the effect of "feeling full" resulting in a decreased caloric intake. Semaglutide will delay gastric emptying by reducing glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner. The delay in gastric emptying can reduce appetite, improve control of eating, and reduce food cravings.

HOW IS SEMAGLUTIDE ADMINISTERED?

It is a once-weekly subcutaneous injection. While some of you may be afraid of injections, these are actually quite straightforward injections with a VERY SMALL needle into the abdominal area (like insulin injections). There are big advantages to the once-weekly dosing - you don’t have to remember your medications and the semaglutide is working 24/7 suppressing your appetite without the stimulant effects of typical weight loss medication.

DOES SEMAGLUTIDE HAVE SIDE EFFECTS

Most common side effects are: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach (abdomen) pain, headache, tiredness (fatigue), upset stomach, dizziness, feeling bloated, belching, gas, stomach flu, and heartburn. Note that most of these are manageable by proper dosing and some overlap with the intended effect of "feeling full".

IS THERE ANYONE THAT CANNOT TAKE SEMAGLUTIDE

There are rare situations where semaglutide is contraindicated. Patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or in patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2) should not take Semaglutide.

DOES INSURANCE COVER SEMAGLUTIDE

Semaglutide is not covered by most Medicare and insurance plans, but manufacturer and pharmacy coupons can help offset the cost. It currently is very expensive (approx. $1300 a month).

I CANNOT AFFORD THAT, IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY?

We have access to semaglutide from a compounding pharmacy for on-going use. The cost of the program is $375 the first month, which includes your consultation and medication for the month, followed by $325 per month thereafter. THIS PRICE INCLUDES THE MEDICATION AND MONTHLY VISITS/WEIGH-INS. We DO accept HSA plans, but we do not bill insurance for payment.

TIRZEPATIDE

This medication works in the same capacity as Semaglutide.  Tirzepatide, brand name Mounjaro, is also a member of a class of drugs that have been used for diabetes management for over a decade - GLP1-RAs (glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists). The weight loss effects of these agents have been known for some time.

HOW DOES TIRZEPATIDE WORK?

Tirzepatide, just like Semaglutide, mimics the effect of "feeling full" resulting in a decreased caloric intake. Tirzepatide will delay gastric emptying by reducing glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner. The delay in gastric emptying can reduce appetite, improve control of eating, and reduce food cravings.

HOW IS TIRZEPATIDE ADMINISTERED?

It is a once-weekly subcutaneous injection. While some of you may be afraid of injections, these are actually quite straightforward injections with a VERY SMALL needle into the abdominal area (like insulin injections). There are big advantages to the once-weekly dosing - you don’t have to remember your medications and the tirzepatide is working 24/7 suppressing your appetite without the stimulant effects of typical weight loss medication.

DOES TIRZEPATIDE HAVE SIDE EFFECTS

Tirzepatide may have side effects, but research has shown that these effects are less than Semaglutide.

IS THERE ANYONE THAT CANNOT TAKE TIRZEPATIDE

There are rare situations where tirzepatide is contraindicated. Patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or in patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2) should not take Tirzepatide.
